The COVID-19 pandemic hit Cambodia especially hard this past year, resulting in increased poverty among households. In March 2020, the government of Cambodia made the difficult decision to close schools due to COVID-19. This left 3.1 million Cambodian children without education.
There are plenty of uncertainties during this global pandemic, but one certainty we have is that the poorest and most vulnerable children and families will bear the greatest burden. Thankfully, the government made an announcement that all children could still pass their classes and begin new classes on January 8, 2021.
With the announcement, came the challenge for Kids Club staff to buy uniforms, supplies, and distribute these materials to the children in time for them to begin classes. Next, came the challenge of doing it with social distancing restrictions still in place, but our Kids Club staff successfully accomplished it in only three days! While they were handing out uniforms, one girl expressed her gratefulness to be sponsored and have the opportunity for an education.
We can abandon ourselves to grieve over all that is difficult and broken right now, or rejoice over all that’s being redeemed and made right. You can make a difference in a child's life.
