HUMAN TRAFFICKING SIGNS AND HOW YOU CAN HELP
Today, the number of people imprisoned in human trafficking is greater than ever before. There are currently men, women, and children in immediate need of rescue. We have a shared responsibility to help keep our communities, cities, and countries safe.
Combating injustice begins with educating ourselves and knowing how and when to report. Below are a few indicators that an individual may be in a trafficking situation. Together, we can report suspicious activity and make the world a safer place.
PLEASE REPORT IF YOU NOTICE THAT AN INDIVIDUAL:
1. Is not free to come and go from their home as they wish
2. Is paid very little, only paid through tips, or not at all
3. Is working long, exhaustive hours, and has restrictions on leaving their workplace
4. Is in the commercial sex trade/has a pimp manager
5. Lives or works where high-security measures are in place (barbed wire, boarded up windows, barred windows, security cameras etc.)
6. Is living and working in the same location
7. Is not allowed to leave their work environment or cannot quit to find another job
8. Does not have control over their wages, money, or finances
9. Shows signs of physical abuse or injury
10. Is accompanied everywhere by someone who speaks for them or allows others to speak for them when addressed directly
If you notice any of these signs, please call the hotline immediately. You may feel obligated to personally intervene or help a potential victim yourself. However, the best thing you can do is report suspicious activity so a thorough investigation can be completed with records that will be beneficial to current and future reports.
The National Human Trafficking Hotline is available 24 hours every day and is completely confidential. When you place a call, it is your choice if you wish to remain anonymous, a confidential source, or if you are willing to be contacted by local law enforcement for further questions. After you place a call, the information you provide will be entered into a database, and follow-up actions will be assigned. You do not need proof or evidence to report suspicious activity - your responsibility is only to make a phone call with any concerns you may have. Every minute could mean the difference in the life of a victim of sexual exploitation and human trafficking. One call could save someone’s life and open a door to freedom!
